As mentioned, most gunshot detection systems work in the same way. In essence, they listen for loud, abrupt sounds in the environment, which then triggers an alert to the appropriate authorities. However, there are many potential triggers, especially if the sensor is located in an uncontrolled environment. Some law enforcement agencies have reported frustrations with false positives that responded to car crashes, fireworks, and other abrupt sounds. As a result, some agencies have stepped away from their gunshot detection systems in lieu of other solutions. DETECTING WAVEFORMS: AVOIDING FALSE POSITIVES
Since we established that just listening for abrupt sounds isn’t very efficient, how can we accurately detect gunshots? By analyzing the energy levels and the waveform of the gunshot.
Every sound emits a unique frequency and amplitude, which can be graphed into what is known as a waveform. Several years ago, the Department of Energy released data about the waveforms associated with different ballistics. Because each energy level and waveform is unique, the ideal gunshot detection system can analyze these and run it against the database provided by the Department of Energy. False positives are then eliminated because the systems are no longer triggered by random sounds; they are triggered once the waveforms have been analyzed and identified.
